The Tour de l’Ain’s third stage offered mixed fortunes for IAM Cycling.

The stage had been eagerly awaited for by both Sébastien Reichenbach and Johann Tschopp, who are acting as the two leaders for the Swiss Pro Continental team, because they saw that the difficult terrain between Izernore and Lélex-Monts Jura would suit their strengths.

The day was won by Luis-Leon Sanchez (Belkin) just ahead of his teammate Tom Jelte Slagter.   As members of the decisive breakaway 30 kilometers from the finish, Johann Tschopp and Sébastien Reichenbach ended the day at opposite ends of the luck spectrum.

Johann Tschopp unfortunately found himself in an ambulance just a kilometer away from the descent of the Col de Menthières (see previous press release), while Sébastien Reichenbach finished the day in a strong 5th place.  The 24 year old pro from Martigny was torn between being satisfied with his performance, and sorry for the ill-luck of his teammate and friend.

“We had done everything right.  Johann attacked at the bottom of the col.  The other favorites were slow to reel him in and I was able to join in with this group of eight riders.  We all went together at the top and Johann marshaled the descent.  Unfortunately, he went straight into a tight left hand turn and fell.  I had to compose myself in the group of now seven riders.  I felt comfortable all day and I hope that I will feel as good in the final stage where we will climb the Col du Grand Colombier only 37 kilometers from the finish.  That will be the decider.”

Directeur Sportif Rubens Bertogliati, praised the merits of his riders.  “Johann and Sébastien were on a mission.  Luck did not ride with them.  But Sébastien did very well and could surprise everyone again in the final stage.  With his good form, we can certainly have high hopes that a victory is not out of the question.”
