THE PLACE

3rd – This is the position that Jérôme Coppel earned in the time trial for the Ruta del Sol. But that is also his place in the overall standings after four stages. Satisfied with his performance, the time trial champion of France is not ready to celebrate yet. “I had pretty good legs, but not over the top exceptional. After three days of racing, that’s pretty normal. The course was challenging and technical. The wind made the road dangerous. We had to stay focused. In the end, I made it to the top rankings, and I hope to keep my place throughout the final stage on Sunday.”

THE ANALYSIS

“This was an individual time trial that was plagued with a lot of wind and a very steep climb,” explained Lionel Marie, directeur sportif for the team in Andalusia. “Jérôme is a specialist and he reconfirmed his talent here. He was disappointed because he wanted to win the stage. But we must remember that the top finishers on a day like today are all world class. Another satisfaction for us proved to be Reto Hollenstein. Despite a slow start, he moved up to 11th place. Hats off to him. The result indicates that our guys are in form. On this course, with that terrible wind, and tricky descents, only very strong riders and specialists could post good times. And we are up there.”

THE FINAL PROVING GROUND

The Alto de la Peñas Blancas. The 15 kilometer climb with sections of 14% gradients, will prove to be the end and the decider of this edition of the Ruta del Sol. It is a first category climb that will ultimately determine the final standings of the race. IAM Cycling certainly hopes to protect Jérôme Coppel’s podium position. “The team is very united around Jérôme,” Lionel Marie ensured. “We have a great group of experienced riders, who all have come with an excellent mentality. We will do everything we can to help. A final podium in this race would be a great result for us.”
