IAM Cycling can look with satisfaction on another race well done in the kickoff of its 2014 season.  After Sylvain Chavanel succeeded in securing the team’s first podium place in a race this season by taking 3rd in the time trial on Saturday, Stefan Denifl earned himself an impressive 3rd place behind stage winner Jean-Christophe Peraud (AG2R-La Mondiale) on Sunday’s climb up Mont-Faron.

The final overall victory went to Steve Cummings (BMC).  IAM Cycling’s Sylvain Chavanel, who started the day in 3rd place overall, took a strong 7th place in the final tally, recognizing that his main objectives are a little further into the season.  In addition to these individual successes, IAM Cycling ended the race in 2nd place in the team standings since it had riders placed well in 3rd, 16th and 20th places on the stage, Stefan Denifl, Sébastien Reichenbach and Sylvain Chavanel, respectively.

Before returning to his native Tyrol, the 26 year old Austrian was smiling again after having endured a week where his legs were not feeling great.

“Finally I am reassured in my condition because I had a lot of doubts after the first stage when I found myself flat on the street.  I did not have enough strength during the long stage of 223 kilometers with the wind and echelons.  But I am not discouraged.  The directors have encouraged me to continue with my efforts to progress.

And today, even after a properly hard time trial, everything went well.  I attacked the climb in 30th position.  And I stayed with our leader Sylvain Chavanel to help as much as possible.  It was he who told me to take my chance, so I managed to hang with the best riders.  And then it all exploded at the top.  My mistake was that I attacked too early.  I found myself behind a Bretagne-Séché rider but in front of Peraud and Cummings.

They then came back to me and I couldn’t hold Peraud’s wheel when he made his final attack.  But I managed to stay ahead of Cummings.  That is a great satisfaction that will help me build confidence for the Tour du Haut-Var.”
