Alberto Contador took a big step towards overall victory in the Tirreno-Adriatico on Sunday.  The Spanish rider from Saxo Tinkoff has emerged first at the top of the wall of Guardiagrele and at the same time increased his grip on the leader’s jersey.  Meanwhile, IAM Cycling set the roads on fire again with the indefatigable Matthias Brändle taking part in the main breakaway, only to be picked up by the eventual winner on the descent of the Lanciano climb.

The Austrian regretted that he did not have more strength to follow the best who were hot on his trail.

“Before Contador attacked on the main climb, I was convinced we could still ride for the stage victory.  I felt good and had recovered well after yesterday’s 244 kilometer effort.  I am not disappointed so far because I know that I have good legs and that bodes well for the rest of the season.”

At his limit in the queen stage, Marcel Wyss was no happier climbing the wall of Guardiagrele which ramped up to 22 and 30% gradients over just 800 meters.  That did not prevent him from appreciating the encouragement of the fans along the roadside.

“It was a very difficult stage.  These past two days have not been great for me since I have not had good feelings.  A blockage in my back keeps me from proving the full measure of my ability.  Nevertheless, the Italian public loves a good show.  You should have seen the excitement when we were attacking the incredible slope.  They encouraged us and pushed the guys in trouble.  Of course I have every expectation that I will find my legs again.  I have set the Tour of Romandie as my first big goal of the season.  So even if I’m not on fire, I will keep my head and improve quickly.”
