Paris-Nice – Rik Verbrugghe «Im Finale war es chaotisch und gefährlich»

Das Feld hat das Flachland verlassen und ist nun in steilerem Gelände unterwegs. Mit drei vermerkten Schwierigkeiten bei dieser dritten Etappe und einer Bergankunft mit einem 200m langen 11% Aufstieg, musste man starke Beine haben, um sich durchzusetzen. Dies war bei Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEdge) der Fall, welcher im Sprint Davide Cimolai und Giacomo Nizzolo hinter sich liess. Jonas Van Genechten, Sprinter von IAM Cylcing, wurde 15. der Etappe.

Nach ruhigen Etappen hat das Feld heute einen nervösen Tag hinter sich, wo die Konzentration hoch sein musste. Kurz gesagt, eine radikale Veränderung. Damit sie sich nicht in eine Falle fällt und um Missgeschicke zu vermeiden, hat das Team von IAM Cycling genaue Vorgaben zu folgen. „Die Strategie war auf den kleinen Strassen der letzten Runde immer vorne zu bleiben und Jonas Van Genechten für den Sprint zu schützen“, erklärte der sportliche Manager Rik Verbrugghe. „Aber es war im Finale relativ chaotisch und gefährlich. Ich habe jedoch eine Mannschaft mit einem starken Kollektiv gesehen, die ihre Leader Sylvain Chavanel und Mathias Frank schützen konnten. Denn Donnerstag erwartet uns eine grosse Etappe. Es galt achtsam zu bleiben, vor allem in den 50 letzten Kilometern, wo man die Nervosität im Feld spüren konnte. Das Wichtigste ist, dass Sylvain und Mathias geschützt wurden und dass sie auf dieser Etappe kein Risiko nehmen mussten.“

Protecting his leaders and helping them limit their risks is exactly what Vicente Reynes, and several others on the team, sees as his role and responsibility.  For the rider from Mallorca, he was on call from the first click of the odometer.  “ It was a fairly easy stage, rather flat and not with any real major difficulties.  But as the kilometers ticked by, and once we got closer to the end, it became very nervous.  The road was very narrow and in the last 75 kilometers it became very stressful. We tried to place Haussler well to help Jonas in the sprint.  But in the final kilometers, when the road was still tight, we were not quite up at the front far enough, so we launched our sprint a little too late.  Today the plan was that I had to protect Jonas.  We wanted to be placed as far forward as possible to start the sprint in the best conditions.  I think today would have been a good finish for his qualities, since he is an explosive rider, and the type of sprinter who can overcome the sorts of climbs like today at the finish.  I think we simply launched our sprint a little too late.  On the positive side, I have very good legs, I’m feeling great, and I know that I can help Chavanel and Frank in the coming days.  So we will try again.”
